Literacy Effects on Voting
Information
Adults with poor reading skills are often barred from effectively participating in the electoral process. The struggle to read campaign literature, newspapers, or other access to information for a person with low literacy impacts their right to vote. Many choose not to vote because they can’t read a ballot.
Only 50% of individuals with low literacy vote. Far less than the 84% of individuals with proficient reading skills. (The National Center for Education Statistics)
